Goodbye Grovers Corners.

"It all goes so fast. We don't have time to look at one another."

A successful run of Our Town came to a close this past Sunday- I suppose all good things must come to an end. Much like life in Grovers Corners it went by much too quickly. There are lots of things to say about a production that comes together so beautifully- I can be the one to tell you sometimes there is a whole other show going on backstage. It was pure art to see so much talent come together to create a lovely moment in time.

When I look back on shows sometimes what I remember most is seeing it before anyone else- sitting alone with only a handfull of other people. The opening number when the cast is in the round and singing American songs was very moving and even the curtain call chokes you up a bit- America the Beautiful.

Kenny wanted to entertain us in the first two acts so that we could see the whole play take place in the third. When you can see that the chairs hanging in midair represented the presence of death in life- then lowered onto the stage to make our graveyard. We cooked real bacon (which caused quite the commotion in the audience each night) when Emily travels back into the world of her collected memory. Her reality bacomes ours and we see what she sees (and smells)- that is, a reminder to really look at each other in our short lives.

An often overlooked play, I'm glad we took time to really look at Our Town.
