A blog for Our Town

When I was asked last June to write a weekly post for True Colors, I said “Oh, sure.” Oh, sure. As if writing a blog entry for a professional theatre company would be the stuff of pie making, easy as breathing I thought. I imagined I would sit at my computer for thirty minutes each week a type out a few paragraphs of theatre blog gold- I failed to consider my obligations. Two shows I was designing costumes for last summer and a commitment to wardrobe (I’ll tell you what that is later) would not stand in my way.

I was the perfect person for this position- I have worked for True Colors since Ceremonies in Dark Old Men; I had been in the trenches and on the front page of the program, not to mention I was around for every single performance! No. I was the person for this job.

When it came time to make a post to the site, I just sat in front of my screen and stared blankly. All the years at True Colors were gone! Poof! I hadn’t a clue what to write about. All the great ideas I had a week or so before were not to be found. I was trotting back and forth on weak sentences and boring paragraphs. Quality I demanded not “the random talk of old folks.” I was at a loss for words.

Take your time they assured me- so I did.

Days, weeks, and yes, even months passed. I would think about the blog on occasion, and how nice this or that would be, but truth be told- I had moved on. That is of course until an early morning in the dawn of our new year. I think it just sort of hit me; all those ideas came rushing back. The whole reason you click on the link to our blog is to discover the process and progress of our theatre. Those things that you are never invited to see, closed rehearsals, costume sketches, and the minds at work in our office. This may seem like an idiot’s epiphany but we don’t always know what you want, the truth is- every theatre company in America wants an open conversation with their audience. Aside from the talkbacks (which we will have a number of) this is how we communicate with you best.

So, in the weeks to come you will notice some changes- our typewriter will be clicking away- we hope yours will too.

Kenny would say theatre is our never-ending quest for truth.

So now I’m here, I’m committed; I have a plan (well sort of). That’s all for now.
